Pentominium Night Shot

This image (which is part of a series) was created for showing the final client in Dubai the complex light design created by renowned lighting engineers in Berlin for this very tall skyscraper.

I first had to create a complete and very detailed solid model in formZ (around 6 million polys) of the building, using the original AutoCAD DWG plans and a rough Sketchup model for reference and orientation. The detail was needed for getting a simulation result as close as possible to the real lighting. Once the light design was completed by the engineers, it was transferred into LightWave by setting up a complex light rig made of around 1.500 spot and area lights. The Luxigon technology in LW was used to place lights using random selected polygons inside the apartments.

The final rendering was done in radiosity mode with Worley's FPrime 3.2, which was also indispensable when used as a real time render preview for setting up the different light rig parts.

Final render resolution was 6000 x 3000 pixel, and each image was rendered overnight on an 8 core Mac under WIndows XP64 with 8 Gbyte of RAM.
I reconstructed the geometry as accurately a s possible in formZ, built custom concrete textures in Photoshop, including normal maps (taking as references the project drawings and lots of photos) and finally rendered it with Maxwell Render. Only a bit of Photoshop afterwork was necessary, mostly tonal mapping.

Townhouse Interior II

Architectural interior study, completely modeled in formZ.This scene started as a client work a long time ago, but later I modified the design again and again. Eventually it became my preferred inhouse interior test scene!

This is one of my favourite renderings of the scene so far, thanks to the Kray plugin renderer for Lightwave. Only a few Photoshop adjustments where necessary, and the render process was very fast (less than 3 h for a 3200 pixel resolution on a Mac G5 quad), considered that all GI elements where used by the engine. I'm particularly happy with the caustics on the ceiling, which conveys that special atmosphere of bright light which is only indirectly seen.

The 3D model, the renderings and the actual planning process did pass many different iterations before resulting in this final design. There was a very tight cooperation with the architects to achieve exactly the translucent glass look they had in mind.

This image was published in many architectural magazines, including 'El croquis' and 'AD Architectural Digest'. As of today, the project is still unbuilt and waiting for it's construction.

This image was part of a first research project last year (2005) which had the purpose to test a new renderer, Next Limit's Maxwell, with a complex architectural model in scale. I reconstructed the whole building by Mies van der Rohe using the published plans which i found in a book about the historical recontruction of this building in Barcelona.
The 3D model was built in formZ, then imported into Lightwave. Here, the scene setup took part. From here, the geometry was sent to the Maxwell application suite, where everything was then rendered. The rendering was a bit grainy and took many hours, but the realism was stunning. What you see as final result had only a few level adjustments and a bit of de-graining in Photoswhop.
